Article of the month

You are the spam problem!

Let me start by saying if after reading this you find you are part of the problem, then good, this article did its job! But don’t stop there. Do something about it! Everyday, I get complaints from people about the large amount of spam they receive, or how their computer is acting up, or they find they have a computer infection, or I read articles about how the amount of spam is constantly increasing. Well, if this sounds like you, or someone you know then do something about it.

First, over 95% of the spam we all receive is sent through botnets. What is a botnet you ask? Well a botnet is a group of compromised computers that is controlled by hackers, spammers, and or organized crime that are used to send spam and attack other computers or networks. These botnets (or groups of infected computers) can be as large as tens of thousands. Where do they get that many computers you ask? Well…you. Yes, many of you reading this article may have a computer at home or at work that is part of a botnet. Your computer could be sending spam to others all over the world without your knowledge or attacking another computer right now! Don’t believe me? Here are just two links to recent articles in the news about this…

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/02/29/botnet_spam_deluge/

http://www.channelregister.co.uk/2008/03/13/loadscc_rises_again/

What just makes me crazy when I read these articles or hear someone complaining about the effects of these botnets is that you could make it nearly impossible for these criminals to do this. It is easy and can cost you nothing but a little time. The reason these criminals are able to control these machines is they infect them with Trojan horses, or other malware. These programs can be picked up by you very easily on the internet when you are downloading your favorite music, ring tone, movie, software etc. without you even knowing. Well, you can protect yourself from these very easily by installing a good anti-virus program and scanning your computer weekly. You must also make sure you keep your anti-virus program updated (most anti-virus programs have updates at least weekly). This is very important as new Trojans etc. are discovered daily.

Next, install a good software firewall program. This will keep your PC safe from outside attacks and also warn you if a program you don’t know about is trying to access the internet from your computer without your knowledge ( such as trying to send spam from your machine). Also, practice safe computing practices by being careful where you download software from. Make sure it is a legitimate website that you trust.

So stop whining about spam and a slow computer because if you have not done something to prevent it then it’s your fault! So, do something about it. There are many very good free anti-virus and firewall programs so you don’t have to spend any money and if you are not sure what programs are good our how to go about installing them there are lots of website's that have articles with this information to help you including this authors. So don’t be part of the problem. Be part of the solution!!

Best regards and good safe computing,

Walter

How to protect your home PC for Free!

Many home PC users either don’t have Antivirus or Malware protection on their PC’s or it is out of date. The two biggest reasons usually are that the software is expensive and that the subscription has to be renewed each year. The second is that they did not renew the subscription and so the software is not protecting the PC because it is out of date.

Well what many home PC users don’t know is that there are free Antivirus programs that work great and do not require a subscription to be paid each year to get the updates.

One such program is AVG Antivirus. Grisoft maker of AVG offers a working version of this product free for home users. This software updates itself automatically as long as you are connected to the Internet. Thus the software is always up to date with the latest protection. Another option for free Antivirus software is a company called AVAST! and they make AVAST! Antivirus. AVAST!'s latest version includes a rootkit and spyware scanner built in, and they offer a free version for home users. Both do a great job and keeping your computer safe from viruses. A paid full version of AVAST! is also available for non personal use and is a great product.

The same holds true for Anti-spyware or malware protection. Grisoft also makes a free Anti-spyware called AVG Anti-spyware free for home use. It does a good job of finding spyware. Comodo offers a free program called Comodo BOClean. BOClean destroys malware and removes registry entries, does not require a reboot to remove all traces, scans automatically and detects instantly in the background. BOClean also updates itself automatically when connected to the Internet. Spybot Search & Destroy free for home use Anti-spyware software is another option. Spybot SD is freeware. Freeware is software you can use for free but if you like it the programmer asks that you make a donation for their work. Although it is not required to make a donation Spybot is a great program and if you choose to use it please consider making a donation to the designer for their work. Spybot updates itself when started and you have to manually run scans it is not automatic.

As you can see you don’t have to spend a big chunk of change to protect your PC. So stop procrastinating and wondering why your PC is running slow with lots of problems and protect your PC TODAY! Web links to the free products mentioned can be found here.
